Why I love 小红书

Learn all about 小红书 so you can use it for language immersion

As I mentioned in my previous blog, immersion is a big part of learning a language, and there are a lot of different ways to be immersed in Chinese language, but my favorite one is using 小红书 also known as  RED.

What is 小红书 ?

Red/ 小红书  is a social media platform filled with interesting content and amazing creators, the topics range from book recommendations to celebrities, in 小红书 you can find everything you can imagine, in my opinion it is like a mix between Instagram and Pinterest and the best part is that everything is in Chinese.

Why I use this App for language immersion

I like this App, because it's all in Chinese and the content is so diverse that it helps you learn new vocabulary and even some slang, you will be able to practice your reading and listening, because there are a lot of videos and most pictures have long captions.

Something that is important to know, is that you are not going to be able to understand everything, and that's okay, because most people that use this app are native Chinese speakers, and as learners we usually don't have the same amount of vocabulary, to fix this problem you will need to use a translator, I recommend using Pleco, and for long sentences 百度翻译 (Baidu Translator), and you can add those new words to Anki so that you can review them later.

How to use 小红书

1) After downloading the app, the first thing that it would ask you is to sign up, you can use your  phone number (手機號豋人)   or  sign up with another app (其他登人方式), the only options are: QQ, Weibo and apple. I recommend using your phone number because it's easier.

2) After you chose one of the two options it will appear something that says: 登人後更精彩, then in case you chose to sign up with your number it will appear this 輸入手機號碼 in there you will write your phone number, under that you will see something that says 輸入驗證碼 and you will click the button that is right next to it,  this will send you a code through a message, then you just need to add the code to where it says.輸入驗證碼, and finally you will click the big red button and after that you will have your account.

3) Then you can personalize your account, just click on 編輯資料 and in will open another page where you are going to be able to add your name, a profile picture and more. The following vocabulary will be useful to personalize your profile:

名字: name / 小紅書號: Red account number  /性別: gender /生日: birthday /地區: district or region / 職業: profession / 學校: school / 簡介: brief introduction/ 背景圖: background image.

4) Finally I recommend you to choose some of your interests, in the main screen you will see a bar on the top and in there you are going to see options that range from 旅行 (travel) to 美甲 (to have your nails done) just select the topics you are interested in, so you can see more of that content.

In this App you can create boards just like you do on Pinterest, if you like a post just click on the star, and it will give you the option to create a board.

For your main screen, the following vocabulary will be useful: 推薦: recommended/ 视频: video/ 直播: live

My favorite thing to do inside this app, is watching video blogs about people's everyday life, I find it interesting and the vocabulary is useful, you can find them by looking up 日常vlog.

I hope you find this post useful, and if you have any other question feel free to DM me or write a comment down below.

Manhuas, a game changer for improving your reading

How to use Manhuas to practice Chinese Improving your reading skills There are many ways to improve your Chinese skills, but when it comes to reading it's all about practice and constant immersion in the Chinese language, there are a lot of different resources that you can try like: books, articles, newspapers but the one I'm going to be focusing on this blog is practicing your reading through Manhuas (which are basically comics). Where can you find Manhuas? So there are a lot of different places where you can find them, for example if you want a physical copy you can find some on Amazon, but there's not a lot of variety, so the best options will be to read them online: there are some platforms that you can use for example: bilibili 漫画  or Webtoon , these two are both web platforms and Apps, so you can use them in the format that you prefer.  They are both free and quite easy to use, they quite similar, but the content in each one is quite different, another thing that is...

What is going on with the 把 structure ?

The 把 structure The reason behind why you need he 把 structure The 把 structure is mostly used to add emphasis, the emphasis is added in the verb/result as it changes their usual position. This structure can be quite confusing, because in most western languages we don't have a structure that is remotely similar, so there is not a direct translation.  Even though this structure is quite hard, it's also really important, in my opinion it is fundamental. In addition, you will encounter this structure early on in your language journey. In my case I learned this structure in the GoChinese 400, and I'm also I'm pretty sure it's part of the HSK 3 coursework. What is the infamous 把 structure?  This structure is quite strict, from what I have learned up to now, the 把 structure never changes. It always follows its original pattern, which is : Subject+把+Object+Verb+ Result   The main uses of the 把 structure: 1)To emphasize that an action has finished Subject+把+Object+Verb+好了/忘了 ...

Small victories youll encounter in your Chinese Journey

Your language journey Everybody has its own path when it comes to language learning, they are all beautiful but completely different, but there are some victories that will happen in most people's language journey. It's important to care about these victories and appreciate it them because these will help you to stay motivated. My experience Up to this point I have been studying Chinese for more than 2 years and a half and I honestly love this language, but I have had my rough patch, mainly when I first started to learn Chinese. I remember that there was a moment I really wanted to quit and this happened on my third module, which was around my 4th month studying Chinese, I was feeling quite frustrated because I was not able to understand a lot of things and I felt like I was not as good as my classmates and to be honest I was not enjoying it; but one on these small victories helped me to stay motivated, and I'm so glad that I was able ...
