Manhuas, a game changer for improving your reading

How to use Manhuas to practice Chinese

Improving your reading skills

There are many ways to improve your Chinese skills, but when it comes to reading it's all about practice and constant immersion in the Chinese language, there are a lot of different resources that you can try like: books, articles, newspapers but the one I'm going to be focusing on this blog is practicing your reading through Manhuas (which are basically comics).

Where can you find Manhuas?

So there are a lot of different places where you can find them, for example if you want a physical copy you can find some on Amazon, but there's not a lot of variety, so the best options will be to read them online: there are some platforms that you can use for example: bilibili 漫画 or Webtoon, these two are both web platforms and Apps, so you can use them in the format that you prefer.

They are both free and quite easy to use, they quite similar, but the content in each one is quite different, another thing that is important to mentions is that they use different written systems, Webtoon uses Traditional Character meanwhile Bilibili 漫画 uses simplified characters, so you can choose the one that's most convenient to you

You can also try Apps that have graded content, for example: M.Mandarin or you can find some manhua accounts on 小紅書.

How to study through Manhuas

The method is actually quite simple, choose a random manhua that might interest you and just start reading it,  the way I like to do it is by first reading the whole episode and trying to understand it by the vocabulary I know and the images, then I reread it and this time I'll look up the words I don't know in Pleco and if I encounter a sentence in which I know the vocabulary, but I simply cannot understand the context I'll look it up in Baidu translator, finally I add the new vocabulary in a chart in case I might want to reread the manhua.

How I'm going to help you navigate through this

In this blog I'm going to be introducing a new section, in which we are going to be reading a manhua together, by this I mean the following:

From a manhua I'll be first reading each episode and from it, I'll add into a chart all the words and phrases that I think are a bit complex, in the chart I'll add the translation, pronunciation, characters in simplified and traditional, and then I'll share the link through this blog so that if you want to read it, you'll already have all the vocabulary which will make your process of reading a lot less time-consuming and efficient.

You can use this vocabulary in two different ways, for example you can practice it before reading so that when you read the episode you'll be able to do it easily, or you can first read the episode and then use the vocabulary chart when you are rereading it.

What is going on with the 把 structure ?

The 把 structure The reason behind why you need he 把 structure The 把 structure is mostly used to add emphasis, the emphasis is added in the verb/result as it changes their usual position. This structure can be quite confusing, because in most western languages we don't have a structure that is remotely similar, so there is not a direct translation.  Even though this structure is quite hard, it's also really important, in my opinion it is fundamental. In addition, you will encounter this structure early on in your language journey. In my case I learned this structure in the GoChinese 400, and I'm also I'm pretty sure it's part of the HSK 3 coursework. What is the infamous 把 structure?  This structure is quite strict, from what I have learned up to now, the 把 structure never changes. It always follows its original pattern, which is : Subject+把+Object+Verb+ Result   The main uses of the 把 structure: 1)To emphasize that an action has finished Subject+把+Object+Verb+好了/忘了 ...

Study Chinese by using comics, novels, etc.

How to choose the perfect novel or comic to learn chinese  Where to buy Chinese books  To find books written in Chinese can be a bit complicated, there are a lot of websites that are usually recommended, for example: books.Taiwan, book depository, purple culture, cypress books and more;   In my case, I opted for another option because I tried buying from books.Taiwan but for a strange reason the order never went through, I think the problem was that all of the cards I tried to pay with were from Mexican banks, so I decided to buy them from Amazon, but as you can imagine there's not a lot of variety, additionally Chinese novels, comics, etc. are hard to find in that platform, because a lot of them don't appear if you look up their title in Chinese, in my experience the way I found the most books, was by searching: the title of the book (Chinese edition), and also by searching for the author instead of the book, another thing that's important to mention is that I used the U...
